Badging is growing. I think it will take time to catch on, if ever, in higher education. However, for professional development, I find it a very attractive way to demonstrate continued learning and skill development. (Updated: January 22, 2015) I wish that Coursera offered badges rather than certificates, but they don’t. Perhaps they will in the future.
